I have been working at St Andrews Castle and Cathedral for just over two years and have just recently been appointed manager. This season has been a bit of a whirl wind for me, starting a new job and getting married! I am quite new to Historic Environment Scotland but I have around ten years’ experience working at historic sites. My previous roles have included being a Tour guide at Rosslyn Chapel and guiding at Gilmerton Cove in Edinburgh. History has always been a real passion for me and I really appreciate the fact that my job involves caring for beautiful historic monuments.
St Andrews is a really vibrant town. We have the oldest university in Scotland and of course, it’s the home of golf. As manager, I am hoping to build on our relationship with the local organisations and work together to create some exciting events for the future.
My job entails juggling three or four different roles in a day, from admissions to cleaning, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Name another job where you get to talk to visitors from all over the world in the morning and then clamber down a 16th Century siege mine in the afternoon!
I also get to play the role of a gift shop manager at the castle & cathedral as we have two great shops. It’s a fun part of the job, creating different displays and working out where the best spots are within the shop to sell certain products. It’s not the main reason I applied for the job but I’ve found I have more of a flair for retail than I first thought!
We have a great team here at St Andrews. There are around twelve stewards and we have the Monument Conservation Unit depot based here too. It’s a real pleasure to work with some really motivated and enthusiastic people and we all make sure there is never a dull moment!
